Windmills Shuttle

Visit the beautiful windmill village Zaanse Schans. Here you will experience all that is typical Dutch in just a few hours.

Begin your tour at our local and central meeting point in Amsterdam. A comfortable, air-conditioned bus will take you to today’s destination in just 20/30 minutes!

The windmill village Zaanse Schans is known to be an open air museum that houses a collection of working windmills, wooden houses, barns and shops that dates back to the 18th and 19th century. All these buildings were brought here from 1961, onwards bringing back to life this most prosperous period of the Zaan region.

In its golden age, the Zaan region developed into an industrial area on a scale that’s never been seen before! The region is filled with 600 active windmills and wooden factories powered by the wind. In these small factories, many tasks were being executed with the aid of wind energy: wood sawn by machines, grinding spices, oil for food and paint, flower, cocoa powder and many other things.

The prosperity in the 18th and 19th century can been seen in the windmill village in several ways: Alongside windmills, barns and other buildings, you will see the beautiful houses that were originally built as homes to rich windmill owners and merchants. These houses have attractive facades and have been painted in traditional colors, such as green, beige and light blue.

Once the bus has arrived in the village, the time to explore the unique village in your own leisure will begin! Take the time you need to explore to the fascinating and historical village. We do recommend for you to visit the clog museum with the annex shoemaker shop and the cheese farm / factory where you are able to taste some of the Dutch farmer cheese. Of course, there are some more facilities for you to visit! In the Zaan region, you can also visit some of the windmills and take a look inside (keep in mind that there is a price on the most of them), have a pancake at the local pancake restaurant “De Kraaij”  and if you want to see the Zaanse Schans village with a total different view, join the windmill cruise!
