Things to do in Amsterdam North
Amsterdam North (“Noord” in Dutch) is the new hotspot of Amsterdam. The district has a more modern feel to it, but still has the atmosphere and charm of the city center. Locals have discovered its creative energy, but it is also becoming more popular among people visiting Amsterdam.
With North quickly becoming a favorite hotspot, there’s plenty of things to do around. To help you get started in discovering the district, we’ve created a list of top activities to do here!
EYE Film Institute Netherlands
The EYE Film Institute Netherlands is also known as “the cinematic memory of the Netherlands” and for good reason. This national museum’s collection includes more than 40.000 movies from all genres, ranging from classics to cult movies. The EYE acts like our national archive of movies, since the earliest materials go back to the start of the film industry in the Netherlands (which is 1895).
The EYE offers many things to see and do related to films. You can visit an exhibition or go to the floor that they have dedicated to educational activities. Check the shop that is like heaven for film enthusiasts or have a meal at the bar/restaurant that offers a lovely view of the IJ River and Amsterdam’s Central Station.
Even just the building of the EYE museum is impressive itself. The striking and futuristic architecture of the building has helped it to become one of Amsterdam’s famous landmarks.

IJhallen
The IJhallen is Europe’s biggest flea market with about 750 stands located in Amsterdam North. Considering the large size of the market, you’ll find a variety of stuff here. Vintage products such as home products and clothes are offered at a low price. The IJhallen is the perfect place for everyone that loves flea markets and bargains. The market is open in the weekends and the entrée tickets for grown-ups are € 5,- for grown-ups and just € 2,- for kids.
A’DAM Tower
The A’dam Tower is home to an urban luxury boutique hotel, a nightclub and a handful of bars and restaurants – including a restaurant on the 19th floor that rotates once every hour. Truly providing you a fantastic 360⁰ panorama of Amsterdam.
You can also find Europe’s highest swing, ‘Over the Edge’, on this sky deck. Daredevils and thrill seekers will swing 100 meters above the ground, back and forth over the edge of the tower with Amsterdam below their feet. Enjoy the unrivalled view over our capital city, while the adrenaline flows through your body.
Tolhuistuin
The Tolhuistuin is a cultural hotspot on the banks of the IJ River. There’s always something to do here: festivals, events, markets, exhibitions, concerts etc. Everything that makes life fun and interesting. The site has different architectural, historical buildings and a garden where you’ll find different cultural activities, events and exhibitions.
Tolhuistuin has their own restaurant called THT. The menu consists of small dishes from all over that invites you to share with your friends.
Pllek
Pllek is a restaurant that has been constructed of old sea containers and sheds with its own urban beach. It’s one of the top hotspot to hang out with friends and have drinks or a meal. Their menu consists of vegetarian dishes for 75%, from which 25% of the dishes is vegan. Their goal is to introduce guests to the amazing alternatives that the vegetarian kitchen has to offer.
Pllek has so much more to offer than just top, quality food. Throughout the year, they’ll host live music, international films, yoga classes, art exhibitions, workshops, mini-festivals etc. In addition, let’s not forget the amazing view of the IJ River and its banks.

How to get to North
Getting to Amsterdam North is super easy. Just take the ferry! The ride takes about 5 to 20 minutes (depending on where you are and where you’re going), is free of charge and fun to do. The ferry sails daily about 5 times per hour.
